SPECIAL WORKINGS AND DISTRUPTIONS

Thursday 9 March 2017: A points failure in the north station throat at Dublin Connolly resulted in only one platform being available for use between 07:32 and 08:02. Services were delayed by up to 40 minutes as a result, with only minor delays present by 11.30

Friday 17 March 2017: Two sets of specials ran in connection with the GAA Finals.

Two 7 ICR combinations were used for Dr. Croke’s GAA from Killarney to Dublin Connolly, departing at 08:05 and 08:35 (returning at 19:30 and 20:15).

Cuala GAA Special: More unusually, two 8-car DART sets were chartered by Cuala GAA (Dalkey), working non-stop from Dalkey to Dublin Connolly.

The passengers for the two special trains were queued in Ardeevin Road, which is on the south (Up) side of the railway, and is accessed from Railway Road, on the Dalkey Village (Down) side of the railway, by way of the overbridge just on the Dublin side of the station. The roads and the bridge were closed to motor traffic. At its longest, the queue stretched across the bridge to Railway Road. At least 2,000 people travelled by the specials, about 80% of whom were children. The special passengers were admitted to the station by way of the wheelchair ramp from Ardeevin Road to the Up platform as soon as the previous normal service DART had left.

A service DART arrived from Bray at about 12:46, an 8-car Japanese set. In addition to normal travellers, there were 300-400 further Cuala supporters for this train, who could not be accommodated on the specials. Loading was slow, as the train was already quite full, and it left about 12:50.

The first special arrived at approximately 12:54, an 8-car LHB set led by 8139, decorated with Cuala flags and balloons. Loading was slow, as the wheelchair ramp is narrow and people could only come down at most two abreast. This special left at 13:04. The final two carriages were not full, reflecting the difficulty in getting people moved out along the platform.

The second special arrived at around 13.09, an 8-car Japanese set with 8629 leading, again adorned with Cuala colours. This train left about 13:21, and all carriages were heavily laden. The IΙ and Cuala stewards on the platform had been more successful with this train in getting passengers towards the Bray end of the train.

Down trains during this period were at 13:01, Bray, and 13:24, Greystones, after the second special had left.

Normal passengers for the Up services were held back from the Up platform until the second special had left.

It was possibly the greatest number ever to join special services at Dalkey. It did however show the difficulty in boarding a very large number of passengers at a station such as Dalkey, where the Up platform is in parts quite narrow, and the platform access routes are also constricted.

Monday 24 April 2017: In connection with an event in Dublin, an 11:15 Kildare – Grand Canal Dock and 17:28 return worked. This is the first time a direct Kildare – Grand Canal Dock service operated. 22030 was provided to work both specials.

Thursday 4 May 2017: A bridge strike in Bray caused the line between Bray and Greystones to be shut for approximately 30 minutes from 14:00 onwards.
