LOCOMOTIVES

071-Class In September, 077, 078, 085 and 087 were undergoing repairs to bodies in Inchicore. This includes sealing of cabs.

201-Class In Inchicore in September work was being completed on the 2-yearly overhaul of 206, with work about to start on 207. Work was finishing on the 4-yearly overhaul of 231 and about to start on 217. Repair work has commenced on 225 following damage it received in a collision with a tractor on the Athlone-Westport line on 2 September 2010.

DIESEL RAILCARS

22000-Class ICRs Six-car set 22037, which had three vehicles repaired in Railcare, Springburn, Scotland, following derailment damage in Laois Traincare Depot, commenced trials on Thursday 8 September. It was based at the Rotem facility in Heuston

New 3-car sets 22051-22054 were off loaded from the MV Tiger at Dublin Port on Saturday 6 August. On Monday 8 August, sets 22053+54 were placed on the rails at the Common User Container Terminal and hauled to North Wall Yard by 076. Then half of the IWT container train was brought to the Terminal for unloading and re-loading by 076. The full 18 wagon IWT container train was hauled to North Wall Yard by 234 and 076 followed later with 22051+52 to North Wall Yard. 076 later brought 22053+54 to Heuston Guinness Yard before returning to North Wall to collect 22051+52.

New 3-car sets 22055-22058 were delivered to Dublin Port on Sunday 25 September by the MV Carmen. Next day sets 22055+56 were placed on rails at the Common User Container Terminal and were hauled to Inchicore by 084 on Tuesday morning. It was reported that sets 22057+58 are to remain in the Port on low loaders due to a lack of storage space at Heuston.

Set 22050 operated its first trial from Heuston to Portarlington on Thursday 7 July. Set 22049 operated its first trial working 19:30 Heuston-Laois Traincare Depot on 20 July.

Procurement In July, IÉ said they “are entering into a heavy maintenance program for one of its fleets of DMU [29000]” [Sic] and advertised for underframe stainless steel cabinets to replace existing cabinets suffering from corrosion.

In August, IÉ advertised for a Resident Engineer to be based at the LH factory in Burton-on-Trent where MTU 6H1800 diesel engine power rafts for DMUs are overhauled in contract with a value of approximately 12m per annum.

Guard Driver Communications (GDC) As part of a program to prepare rolling stock for GSM-R [digital radio] equipment it was necessary to remove the GDC component from the on-board train radio units fitted to the DMU and ICR fleet. The GDC button on the control panel of the train radio on a DMU or ICR ceased to have any function but trains could still communicate with GDC hand-portable units by placing the cab train radio in open channel 13. The DMU and ICR fleet is driver-only operated and operate without a guard on IÉ. Modification work commenced in mid-August and was expected to take one month. There were no changes to GDC arrangements for locomotive worked trains.
