ROLLING STOCK

Mk III With more and more services being operated by InterCity Railcars (ICRs), existing carriages are becoming redundant. Utilisation of sets is now much reduced and several are kept on standby. As vehicles become due for overhaul or major work they are being placed in store. By the end of August the following Mk III, Mk IIIa, and Mk III push-pull vehicles had been stored: 6103, 6201, 6203, 6204, 6205, 6206, 6207, 6208, 6301, 6305, 6306, 6308, 6313, 6401, 7131, 7141, 7150, 7153, 7154, 7156, 7159, 7161, 7170, 7401 and 7612.

On Thursday 10 July, 074 hauled redundant Mk III and Mk III push-pull vehicles to Dundalk for storage. The vehicles were: 6306 + 7131 + 7159 + 6301 + 7154 + 7153 + 6313 + 7612 and were stored in the down side sidings opposite the main station platforms. On Tuesday 16 September, 202 hauled 7401 + 7170 + 7141 + 7156 + 6305 + 6308 + 7101 + 7601 to Dundalk for storage. The Mk IIIa (International) set remains stored in North Wall and now has been badly attacked with graffiti.

A fuel saving modification has been made to some Mk III electric generator vans (EGVs). Each van is fitted with two Cummins diesel engines each driving an 380V AC generator. In normal service, both engines run, but this is expensive on fuel when the train is sitting in a siding. The new modification shuts one of the two engines down 60 minutes after the vehicle has stopped, with substantial fuel savings.

All recent deliveries used road low-loaders from Rosslare Harbour via the N11, M50 and the Dublin Port Tunnel to Alexandra Rd in Dublin Port , where they were craned onto their bogies. On Thursday 7 August, sets 8104 and 8127 passed through the M50 toll booths at 11:00 en route to Alexandra Rd. They were hauled to Fairview Shed by 163, passing North Wall at 15:30. Both these sets had left Ireland for refurbishment on Friday 11 April. The last two sets, 8122 and 8116, were observed near Ashford, Co Wicklow, at 10:30 on 28 August. After being re-united with their bogies on Alexandra Rd , 173 hauled them to Fairview
