STATIONS  

Galway   In September, CIÉ announced that a €750m retail/commercial development and transport interchange is to be constructed on the 4-acre site of Ceannt station and the adjacent bus depot in Galway. A key feature is improved facilities for rail and bus passengers and CIÉ has sought architects to design the 50,000-m2 facility. The sidings of the former freight yard had been scotched out-of-use during the summer.

Heuston   Work continues on renewing the train-shed roof without any disruption to rail traffic. The section nearest the buffer stops has been completed.

DEPOTS

Laois Traincare Depot, Portlaoise In December, IÉ issued an Enquiry for the ‘Design and Build of a New Railcar Maintenance Depot and Associated Infrastructure located at Knockmay, Portlaoise, approx 52 miles from Dublin City. The work will be carried out under a Design and Build Contract from scheme design, planning submission documentation, through to detailed design, construction and commission-ing. Design & Build experience in a multi engineering environment is essential. The facility briefly consists of:

Five Road Maintenance Depot, containing heavy lifting equipment, bogie drop, gantry cranes, stores, workshops, administration and staff facilities.

Train Wash & pump Room

Wheel Lathe & Housing

Under-frame train wash

Tank Farm

Valeting area with toilet discharge and fuelling point

Associated infrastructure, permanent way, signalling, roads, car parking etc’.

Procurement of equipment for the new depot is well under way. The contract for supply and

installation of the train wash has been awarded to Neu International of France and for the supply and installation of the under-floor wheel lathe to Sculfort Muller et Pesant of France. The contract for the supply and installation of train lifting equipment has been awarded to Neuero of Germany.

Connolly   One of the two lines in the Valeting plant has been modified to accommodate railcars by removing sections of the elevated walkway that runs the length of the building.

In November, IÉ sought tenders for the supply and construction of a Controlled Emission Toilet evacuating system for emptying railcar toilets at Connolly station. Seven discharge points will be provided to cater for 8-car railcars.

Cork   The main contractor commenced work on the new carriage maintenance facility in the area between the signal cabin and the locomotive shed on 19 September. Track and points were renewed by IÉ at various weekends commencing on 15 September. A long pit has been dug for underfloor servicing and five new oil storage tanks have been installed.
